Scholarly Communications Workshop

The workshop will focus on scholarly communications and will be presented by Dr. Ray English, currently the library director at Oberlin College and current chair of the ACRL Scholarly Communications Committee.

Part I
Issues and dysfunctions in the scholarly communications system
The first part will focus on issues such as the high cost of scholarly journals, the effect of costs on library budgets, issues related to electronic journal licenses, and the economic problems of university presses.

Part II
Strategies for fostering reform in the scholarly communications system
The second part will focus on strategies including creating competitive journals, editorial board control, collective buying, open access journals, author control of copyright, and author self-archiving.

Part III
Actions for librarians and faculty
The third part of the workshop will address specific actions that librarians and faculty can take to foster change in the system of scholarly communication.

Part IV
Developing a campus plan for scholarly communications
In this last part of the workshop participants will work on a campus plan for scholarly communications issues. Participants will also share the ideas they’ve developed for their plans.
